Details are below, but if you have any questions, go ahead and ask. You can use a generic premade provided by D&D Beyond for example, I have a few from some adventure modules, or we can use Session 0 to work on your avatar.
The idea here is to be generous with yourself and your background. Don't just say you're a Bard. Where did you travel from to get here? Why are you an agent of good or an agent of chaos? Does your character have any beliefs that challenge or affirm or even maybe offend non-locals?
The book has some backgrounds available, but you can always create your own. And no, you do not need to create something for every block of info on a character sheet. You can fill in your character as you go. Perhaps they are a blank slate right now, and as you play you realize they dislike horses and cabbage, but love smashing goblins.
You will use my point buy system for this.
What this means is that you use points to buy your stats. Start at 0, each point you buy of an attribute costs 1 point. Unlike the game, I don't stack the value, so 1 point from 0 is 1 point. 1 point from 17 is 1 point.
But there are a few stipulations:
So 18, 18, 13, 13, 12, 14 is a valid set. It adds up to 88 points total and only has two 18's. If this seems high, it's because it is. You're HEROES!
Generally, if it's in the game you can use it. But if you have any questions, please ask. Since we're in my Homebrew world I might not have your chosen race written in and you might get to be the first one ever seen.
You will use the starting money at max (i.e. 2d4x10 would be 8x10 for 80 gold) or use the given standard/beginner equipment that is listed.
And no, you're family didn't bequeath you a +2 longsword of demon slaying before you left. But maybe it's a family heirloom and is part of your personal quest/history.
Consumables.
Buy components for spells (component pouch), food, water, tack and harness, whatever. I turned on the cheats and you no longer consume what you purchased. Or if that's too unbelievable, let's agree that you always top off your supplies at any stop capable of supporting your needs. Basically, just buy it once, put it on your sheet, and you're good. But buy it! Don't try to cheese the system and buy one day of food and assume it refills each day... it won't. Buy 10 days and we're good. Or make friends with a Druid who can and does cast Goodberry.
Weight.
Weight does matter, keep amounts reasonable. If you buy 20 arrows, that is 1 gold and 1 pound. We're not accountants, I don't expect tireless bookkeeping, and come on, 1 pound is reasonable. However, if you buy 10 sets of 50' of rope...that's a LOT of weight!
50' hempen rope = 10 pounds, x 10 sets = 100 pounds. 15 x your strength is your carrying capacity, be aware.
If you have issues like you can't remember all your abilities or spells, what actions you have, your racial bonuses, whatever, that's fine.
If you're kind of shy and don't necessarily like speaking in front of people, make that a part of your character. Maybe they're mute and just follow someone, a fellow player, out of convenience and mutual respect.
Some tips to help:
You don't have to read about and use every ability you have every time your turn comes up.
If you have other issues, let me know and we can probably find a way to work around them.
If you have internet, the good news is I can provide them. When you join, I will add you to my campaign at D&D Beyond's website*. In there, I have many of the books and I turn sharing on. This means you can use any books that I have there.
If we are in person, I likely have the book, a PDF or digital version, or some other way to get the book in your hands for use.
Aside from that, feel free to purchase any book you want to use!
*This is a completely legitimate feature designed by D&D Beyond on purpose.
Don't cheat. Eat the bad roll, rejoice in the good one.
Don't try to game the system. You already have a lot of health, I cheese consumables.
Argue your point. We can review it, maybe look it up, but in the end, it's me who is the DM. Accept the ruling and move on. If it still irks you, bring it up after and privately.
Loud, obnoxious, rude, malicious behaviors are not wanted. We're going to play and have fun. If you stop that from happening for anyone, you're at risk of being excused from playing.
Actually, that goes for all the above. If you break the "fun" rule by cheating, gaming, arguing, etc. I will most likely ask you to leave and not have you back.
